Photography is a documentary process, but it becomes art when the photographer creates something to document. Light, color, experiences, personal histories and opinions are all tings that create a new world that that artist then captures. This is how I see my photographs.
This work is my way of using photography to tell stories. These stories are of experiences I’ve had, or narratives I have heard or read. The images are often planned and orchestrated, with characters and costumes; some places are found and changed and others are constructed, all with the intention of telling the story.
Many of the images I make are of women, mostly because I feel a sensibility about the history of women and their stories. Some of the characters in my photographs are more archetypes or representative of human nature than they are individuals.
I let the viewer decide what the outcome is. Why she is there and who she is.
