In my latest paintings, I incorporate drawings of superimposed city maps, creating imaginary cities from disparate, yet sociologically relevant, times and places. The streets of ancient Rome intersect those of of present-day Washington, D.C. in "Seeds of Empire"; the Tigris (Baghdad) and Mississippi (New Orleans) Rivers intersect each other in "He turned their waters into blood." I focus on locations where historical events have taken place (The Forum, the Capitol, the Iraqi National Museum, the Superdome). I cut into the canvas and stuff sheer pockets of fabric with bits and pieces of the earth and its elements—seeds, twigs, moss, stones and glass--to represent these buildings, bridges and neighborhoods. Through these painted and sewn documents, I challenge viewers to see reality as a collapsed space-time continuum, wherein related current and past events are inextricably entwined. These pieces also serve as the personal account of the horror I have experienced as these cities have crumbled in more ways than one. www.k-b-e.net/painting
