Above and Beyond Dance aims to break the traditional boundaries of dance theater by utilizing circus arts techniques (such as aerial work, stilts, and acrobatic elements) in the creation of movement which functions clearly within a dance aesthetic. Our first season of performances will be developed collaboratively, with several choreographic teams participating in the creation of our evening length SEEKING. Our goal, incorporating circus arts techniques into dance, is to effectively extend the range of line and movement beyond that which traditional dance styles can achieve. These techniques create a stage environment which can explore both vertical and horizontal dimensions in new and exciting ways. Dancers may appear upright, inverted, impossibly tall, or free of the constraints of the earth altogether. Within this strange new world, perceptions of connection and disconnection are heightened, enabling the exploration of ideas about human isolation and interaction.
