If his-tory is still largely the story told by the victors, the question can be asked, “How then do I relate to art history?” My work attempts to tackle this question, reinstating Woman as narrator and protagonist.
Throughout periods of my life, I have been particularly affected by the marginal positions that women have occupied in society as well as in art, and have focused on themes such as body image double standards, female roles in society, and representations of women in western art.
Using a visual vocabulary of repetition and iconic female imagery, and using materials traditionally associated with "women's work", I hope to challenge the way the viewer relates to these images; to work in a way that, as Nancy Spero puts it “averts the male gaze”. My aim is to work outside of a structure of thinking that proposes the binary choice “either/or”, and rather give myself the option of a more inclusive range of “both/and-”.
