The Many Lives of Miss Chatelaine is a tribute to k.d. lang, as she has gone through numerous musical and personal changes throughout her career. My artwork is an impression or sketch rather than an exact rendering. The complexity of her music interwoven with her life, viewed in a piece of artwork is impossible to capture, it’s too limiting and the task would be daunting to attempt such a feat.
To begin the sketch I gathered numerous books that in some way, either directly or tangentionaly, have affected kd lang. Some of her musical influences and collaborations with Roy Orbison and Patsy Cline were monumental. Her affinity with animals, nature and the earth are essential elements in her life as are her beliefs in Buddhism, Vegetarianism and the freedom of individuals to be in love relationships that are true to their soul whether they are gay, lesbian or straight.
Through collage, sculpture, written text--using lists of birds and flowers from Alberta for example, cut paper, stitching zippers and pages together, they make a composite portrait that both figuratively and literally unfolds. The zippers are used to accommodate changes, also referencing the notion of cutting and pasting used in computer software programs. There is the possibility for additions with future experiences, zipping addendum pages onto the previous ones again and again.
