I call myself a “choreographer on canvas.” Following a long dance career, it is only natural that movement drive my work on paper and canvas. Though many of my paintings and collages are inspired by dance, pride in my rich Haitian/Caribbean heritage and growing up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn also influence my work. A dancer at heart, movement, combined with the use of vibrant color, is essential to my work. In my collages and printmaking with chine colle, the process of layering papers provides that movement with texture through placement, and invokes a sense of the unexpected. It is dance, heritage and scenes and stories of my beloved Brooklyn that make up Ramona Candy’s personal collage.
