"There is something beyond our mind, which abides in silence within our mind. It is the supreme mystery…"
- the Maitri Upanishad
As a New Yorker, I am moved by the city's monolithic, architectural and unspoken self-expression. Through my work I try to document the mythic stories that the city reveals – and conceals – through this language of forms, lights, shadows and symbols. As I continue to explore The City on long walks at night, I begin to discern a “secret history”: an alternative, mythic narrative, revealed in silence.
In my solitary nocturnal expeditions, New York's busy, teeming spaces metamorphose into dream worlds that my seeing invests with its own feelings and imaginings. It is in that dialog that the streets and facades take on lives of their own, revealing themselves to be characters in an ongoing drama that began in ancient times.
I have a strong relationship with spaces and objects, and the stories they tell. My LumiNocturnes series reveals the city at night, when mysteries are evoked in light and shadow. In my Urban Deities series, I am more overtly exploring the mythic presence that resonates in New York's layers of time and spaces.
My work reflects my years of experience as a painter and a muralist. My technique involves a multi-media collage of digital painting and photography, images captured sometimes spontaneously, sometimes with a composition in mind. This layered form of expression embodies the many-leveled perspective with which I address my subjects, the surprise of discoveries and the work of articulating the mute meanings I discern in ineffable images.
I am exploring the stern glamour of New York - not the outward appeal of particular locations, or beautiful fashionable spaces, but the charisma of mystery.
