About Arts in Bushwick
It is the mission of Arts in Bushwick to provide a platform for creative minds in the community and work towards an integrated and sustainable neighborhood through arts programming, creative accessibility, and community organizing.
Bushwick Open Studios - May 30th - June1st 2014
Bushwick Open Studios (BOS) is a three-day arts and culture festival, hosted annually by the volunteer organization Arts in Bushwick (AiB). Now in its eighth year, this celebration of our neighborhood’s vibrant community and local art scene is free and open to the public. BOS is New York’s largest open studios event, encouraging hundreds of artists to open their doors and share their work. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a series of events, performances, and panels, coordinated by AiB.
AiB Community Projects
The Arts in Bushwick (AiB) Community Projects Team facilitates a variety of short-term and long-term programs and events to serve the needs of youth and families in the Bushwick community. The all-volunteer team, comprised of artists, art educators, art therapists and community organizers supports the AiB mission to provide a platform for creative minds in the community and works towards an integrated and sustainable neighborhood through arts programming, creative accessibility, and community organizing. Through creative partnerships with other Bushwick organizations, the community projects team facilitates public art projects, events and youth programming throughout the year with a focus on accessibility and sustainability. This year, the team is thrilled to present a youth community mural project, 2014 Community Day on May 31st 2014 and the 2014 Arts in Bushwick High School Fellows Program.
2014 AiB High School Fellows Program
This year, the Community Projects team is excited to be piloting the 2014 Arts in Bushwick High School Fellows Program. This program is comprised of a group of mentors, a carefully recruited volunteer team of Bushwick artists, art educators, art therapists and community organizers who are dedicating their creative energies and professional experiences to these students or fellows, who were nominated by their teachers or community leaders in the fall of 2013 for demonstrating creativity and leadership. From January through June 2014, the fellows will meet with their mentors in monthly hands-on studio workshops and in peer discussion groups with special guest artists to cover topics such as artist identity, new mediums, writing an artist statement, peer critique, installing an exhibition, social action through art and community leadership. A part of the program requires the fellows to contribute a minimum number of community leadership volunteer hours in Bushwick. The program will culminate in a self-curated group art show for the fellows during the 2014 Bushwick Open Studios festival on May 30th. Upon the successful completion of the pilot, the AiB High School Fellows program will officially launch in September 2014 and will run annually through the academic year. The AiB Community Projects Team hopes to create an annual Arts in Bushwick High School Fellows Scholarship Award.
