Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance provides exceptional dance performance and educational programs while simultaneously breaking down the impediments that limit access for many low-income people. All of Cora’s programs are PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN. No one is ever turned away from an event or class based on ability to pay. Through its professional dance company, SH/CD brings the critically acclaimed work of choreographer Shannon Hummel to thousands of audience members annually, offering FREE and sliding scale tickets to shows. The celebrated cast of dancers regularly performs Hummel’s work as much on the world’s most prestigious stages as on MTA benches, in city parks, and the hallways of public housing, bringing dance directly to people. Led by Hummel - a career arts educator as well as choreographer, with nearly 30 years of teaching experience - Cora Dance annually provides 200+ students (over 70% of whom are on scholarship) with top-tier professional dance training in ballet, modern, hip hop, and other disciplines. The school, situated in the shadow of Brooklyn’s second largest NYCHA public housing community, provides free snack, dancewear and after-school pick-up to all families in need; internships in dance pedagogy, choreography and administration; and through its CYC/Cora Youth Company program, pre-professional performance opportunities, college scholarship assistance and guidance with applying to performing arts colleges, high schools and middles schools to 8-15 select students. Seven days a week from its studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Cora Dance works daily to provide equal access to great art for all people.
