Founded in 2003, Calpulli Mexican Dance Company celebrates the rich diversity of Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage through dance including live music. To this end, the organization produces professional performances via its touring company, designs arts-in-education programming, and leads community outreach activities, most notably its youth dance and music programs in multiple locations across the tri-state area.

The company tours nationally in the USA and is featured at venues in New York City and beyond including Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Carnegie Hall, Cal Tech University, Wortham Center in Houston, TX, and Queens Theatre. It made its internationally debut in 2013 in the Kingdom of Bahrain. After its performance at Lincoln Center in August 2015, the New York Times had this to say:

"Terrific company of warm, generous dancers and a mostly female band gave a quick, vibrant tour of Mexican traditions- from Yucatan, Oaxaca, Jalisco- with eye-popping costumes for every stop. The finale with the flying machetes was something to see."

Calpulli's Arts-in-Education programs serve diverse audiences ranging from elementary-age students to collegiate settings to nursing centers. Calpulli is also experienced with limited mobility audiences, hospital audiences, and special needs students. Calpulli aims to provide entertaining, engaging, and educational experiences that compliment curriculum and lessons in the class room. A full study guide is available for all residencies and performance. You can learn more about our arts-in-education work at this vide link:

Teaching Artists with the organization are trained on the company's repertoire, developing curriculum-aligned plans for students with teachers, and are trained on local and state learning standards and apply the Blueprint for Dance in all lesson plans. Furthermore, a detailed study guide accompanies all educational programs.

Community outreach programs aim to provide year-round access to all audiences, specifically targeting underserved Mexican immigrant families in multiple boroughs. When arts-in-education programs come to an end in respective schools, families and students who would like to continue to learn with Calpulli are invited to the donation-based community classes.
