Our organizational history is one of community service and cultural reconciliation. Our current energies are focused on presenting live-performance events that pay homage to our constituency’s ancestral and cultural roots. One such event is our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day gathering. This features numerous singers and spoken-word artists recreating the important songs, speeches, and texts of the abolitionist and civil-rights eras. Another important event is Jazz Café, mixing multicultural food with a multitude of jazz styles. Presenting music integral to the Harlem renaissance and the shaping of black identity creates a thematic unity with the Martin Luther King Day concert. While these are only two samples of our programming, these events are unique in that they are specifically geared towards more fully engaging our constituencies and community by recalling the past through the voice of current performance art, with the goal of encouraging a rich, inclusive cultural future.
