Exploring the Metropolis (EtM) focuses on the built environment and helps the following two New York City cultural communities: performing artists/companies seeking affordable, suitable workspace to rehearse and perform, and cultural facilities with underused space and the need to activate them.

EtM administers the EtM Con Edison Composers' Residency program which provides composers with free workspace in a cultural or community facility in the borough in which they live. Brooklyn-based composers are eligible for residency at Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy. Our recent BYCA resident composers include Chris Cerrone, Rima Fand, Gabrielle Herbst, Molly Herron, Nicholas Urie and Kamala Sankaram. Each composer presents a free public program at the culmination of their residency.

Exploring the Metropolis created NYC Performing Arts Spaces, the free database website of rehearsal and performance space rentals, starting in 2001 and now operated by Fractured Atlas. The organization engages with cultural communities and facilities through studies of their physical facility needs and operating structures and works with the public sector by supplying neutral data.
