Brooklyn Rises for Puerto Rico: a Benefit Concert @ Union Hall

Log-in to Favorite

A benefit concert for the people of Puerto Rico who are all suffering from the profound devastation of Hurricane Maria. With over 1 million Puerto Ricans living in New York, Brooklyn rises for Puerto Rico to help all those who have friends and family struggling to survive on the island.

With an incredible line-up of Puerto Rican talent, BROOKLYN RISES features members of the original broadway cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's IN THE HEIGHTS as well as the broadway hit ON YOUR FEET: the life and music of Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

In an evening packed with music of all styles, Brooklyn rises with multi-instrumentalist and San Juan-born composer, Angélica Negron. Her music has been described as “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative” (WQXR/Q2) and “mesmerizing and affecting” (Feast of Music) while The New York Times noted her “capacity to surprise” and her “quirky approach to scoring”.  She was recently selected by Q2 and NPR listeners as part of “The Mix: 100 Composers Under 40” and by Flavorpill as one of the “10 Young Female Composers You Should Know”.

A long time member of the Puerto Rican underground music scene, Angélica is a founding member of the electro-acoustic pop outfit Balún where she sings and plays the accordion and violin. With her project Arturo en el Barco she concentrates on working with lo-fi ambient compositions and has released albums on Observatory (Austria) and Carte Postale Records (Belgium).

Alongside musical performances, BROOKLYN RISES includes a silent art auction featuring artwork from NY Times and Wall Street Journal illustrator David G. Klein, Brooklyn Daily Eagle/Puerto Rican courtroom sketch artist Alba Acevedo, and many more.
