Founded in January 2016, Sonic Arts For All (SAFA!) is a new non-profit on a mission to provide a rigorous and engaging alternative to the traditional music classroom for K-12 and special needs students in New York City. According to a 2014 report from the New York City Office of the Comptroller, 28% of schools in New York City lack even one full-time, certified arts teacher, and more than 42% of those schools are located in the South Bronx or Central Brooklyn. Accordingly, we leverage technology to help these underserved demographics gain access to both music education and music technology — we provide professional-grade digital music and recording equipment for our students to use at all of our workshops. We also help families make music at home with the technology they already have, such as tablets and PCs.
SAFA! has held teaching residencies at a variety of locations in NYC, including the Brooklyn College Art Lab, the Brooklyn College Center for Computer Music, and POWRPLNT. We currently offer three afterschool and weekend programs for the K-12 communities of Greater Flatbush and other neighborhoods through the Brooklyn College Community Partnership. SAFA! is also a certified vendor for the New York Department of Education and the New York City Housing Authority, and we are in the final stages of developing teaching residencies for several New York City public schools. Finally, SAFA! was a beneficiary of the Music Of Foundation’s Carnegie Hall Tribute Benefit Series in both 2016 and 2017.
