Kriyol Dance! is a collective of artist-leaders working together to create one platform oriented towards advocating for the unapologetic voices of Black arts and Haitian culture in particular through collaborative and unified work and intervention. Each artist participating in the collective creates original work focused, to some capacity, on the preservation of Black diasporic culture and Haitian culture, and on the promotion of Haitian life through engagements arts (i.e. artistic work that involves community voices, community issues, and the Haitian state of affairs), in addition to developing an innovative and multi-pronged approach to use art as a tool for commentary as opposed to simply entertainment.
Importantly, we hope to make normative discussions of Haitian culture that do more than harp on our cultures richness; we aim to continuously place that focus of discussion on Haitian lives both in-country and abroad. In Kriyol Dance! our bodies become the physical representation of what we know, hear, inherit and learn. Dance is an essential tool in how we choose to develop, advance, and uplift our communities, across varying cultural backgrounds and belief systems. In our social practice, each team members is their own creating artist specializing in ideas, theories, and movement inherent to their own experience. We find our unifying platform in Haitian dance movement and in discourse centering community wellness.
