What is a fiscal sponsor?
A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit (tax-exempt) organization that agrees to receive funds for your project and pass them on to you. A fiscal sponsor is not someone who directly funds your project.
Since most grant funding is awarded to nonprofits rather than to individuals, obtaining a nonprofit fiscal sponsor can increase the number of grant opportunities you can pursue.
Individuals do not need a fiscal sponsor to apply for a BAC DCA Regrant, but may apply with a fiscal sponsor if they prefer. DCA Regrant fiscal sponsors must:
*be NYC-based
*have 501(c) (3) IRS nonprofit status
*if your fiscal sponsor has received funding from DCA for FY 2009, then your fiscal sponsor cannot be a collaborator on your project
Note: DCA Regrant applicants with ongoing fiscal sponsorship through NYFA, Fractured Atlas, or the Field, may use those sponsorships for this grant if they wish to.
Individuals and organizations without nonprofit status MUST HAVE a fiscal sponsor to apply for a BAC NYSCA Regrant. NYSCA Regrant fiscal sponsors must:
*be Brooklyn-based
*have one of the following forms of official nonprofit status: US Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c) 3 (a vendor tax exempt certification is not valid); NYS Not-for-Profit Charter from Board of Regents under Section 216 of the Education Law; NYS Charities Registration (Article 7A), with the organization’s registration number; or Certificate of incorporation under S.402 of the NYS Not-for-Profit Law.
*NOT have applied directly to NYSCA for funding for Fiscal Year 2009 (whether or not they received funding)
If your fiscal sponsor is also applying this year for a BAC NYSCA Regrant, your fiscal sponsor’s request plus your request must not exceed $5,000. BAC cannot be a fiscal sponsor for a NYSCA Regrant.
Any organization that has applied to NYSCA directly for the current fiscal year(whether or not they received funding) is ineligible to apply or serve as a fiscal sponsor for a 2009 BAC NYSCA Regrant.
