Prayers for the Dead

An intersection of Jewish, Afro-Grenadian, Italian Catholic and Nepalese Buddhist practices.

Prayers for the Dead is the fifth event in a series of public programs for BAC's Days of the Dead in Brooklyn. Join us for Jewish songs of mourning sung by Cantor Janet Leuchter and the Beth Elohim Choir, under the direction of Rose Moskowitz; a dance presentation of Afro-Grenadian funeral practice featuring Dean Maitland; a discussion with Ron Ceraso, 4th generation Italian funeral home director at Ceraso-Gennarelli Funeral Home, established in Bensonhurst in 1890; and an explanation of Buddhist funeral and ancestral tradition. Moderated by BAC folklorist Kay Turner and Beth Elohim Rabbi Andy Bachman and Cantor Janet Leuchter.

Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and also present their own traditions of mourning and remembrance. The event is free and open to the public.

ABOUT DODB
This event is part of BAC Folk Arts' year-long project Days of the Dead in Brooklyn (DODB): Diverse Traditions of Death, Mourning and Remembrance. The primary goal of DODB is to heighten public awareness of Brooklyn-based community and family arts practices related to mourning and remembrance. Public programs including performances, lecture-demos, and symposia will be presented at a range of venues throughout 2008-2009.
