Curatorial Description:
Clamoring to Become Visible will examine how the written word interacts with and often replaces the normative notion of visual aesthetics within the gallery space.
Clamoring to Become Visible will examine how the written word interacts with and often replaces the normative notion of visual aesthetics within the gallery space.
Whether appropriated from popular culture, literary passages, or purposefully written by an individual artist, the utilization of language within the realm of contemporary visual arts presents specific challenges, both aesthetic and conceptual. The ability of the viewer to process the content of the written word is starkly different from the more visceral capacity to absorb the visual nature of art. It is this dichotomy that imbues text-based art with a limitless number of possibilities to reach its viewer on various intellectual and intuitive levels. BAC Gallery invites two-dimensional artists working in photography, painting, drawing and mixed media to apply.
Deadline for submissions: November 13, 2008
To qualify you MUST be on Brooklyn Arts Council’s Artist Registry.
• Only two-dimensional work or work that can be hung on the wall will be considered for this exhibition. (Unfortunately we cannot accept video submissions but you can submit a still as a stand alone image.)
• All chosen works must be sturdily framed with D rings (paintings on stretcher bars do not need to be framed but should have D rings)
• All work must have been conceived within the past three years.
