Undertaking Death: A Conversation with Brooklyn Funeral Directors features local undertakers providing insight into the folklore of death and remembrance as practiced in Brooklyn's diverse communities, including Russian, Polish, Lebanese, and Dominican.
These neighborhood undertakers provide a unique source of information on the history and meaning of traditional funeral and mourning practices. Brooklyn’s ethnic and religious diversity is something they know firsthand. Many of them come from funeral families who have served Brooklynites for three, four, even five generations.
WHEN: Wednesday, May 20, 2009, 7-8:30pm
WHERE: Brooklyn Public Library, Grand Army Plaza, Dweck Auditorium
This forum will give a number of Brooklyn undertakers the opportunity to share their knowledge in a public forum moderated by BAC folklorist Kay Turner.
PARTICIPATING SPEAKERS:
Salvatore “Buddy” Scotto, Scotto Funeral Home (Carroll Gardens)
Maria Sealy and Renaye Cuyler, Sealy Cuyler Funeral Home (Bed-Stuy)
Arsenio “Sammy” Lopez and his daughter Maya, Borinquen Funeral Home (Bushwick)
Music artists will open and close the evening with short performances of Yemeni Jewish lamentation presented by Shoshana Tubi and Polish funeral hymn presented by Halina Kalitka. There will be ample time to engage the audience in discussion with the undertakers.
