About Fiscal Sponsorship: Grants Program

This page contains information on working with a fiscal sponsor when applying to BAC's Grant Programs. For more information on BAC's Fiscal Sponsorship program, click here.

WHAT IS A FISCAL SPONSOR?
A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit (tax-exempt) organization that agrees to receive funds for your project and pass them on to you. A fiscal sponsor is not someone who directly funds your project.

Since most grant funding is awarded to nonprofits rather than to individuals, obtaining a nonprofit fiscal sponsor can increase the number of grant opportunities you can pursue.

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP FOR LOCAL ARTS SUPPORT
Individuals and organizations without nonprofit status must have a fiscal sponsor to apply for Local Arts Support.

Local Arts Support fiscal sponsors must:
  • Be Brooklyn based
  • Have one of the following forms of official nonprofit status:
    • US Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c) 3 (a vendor tax exempt certification is not valid);
    • NYS Not-for-Profit Charter from Board of Regents under Section 216 of the Education Law;
    • NYS Charities Registration (Article 7A), with the organization’s registration number; or
    • Certificate of incorporation under S.402 of the NYS Not-for-Profit Law.

  • Not have applied directly to New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for funding for Fiscal Year 2012, whether or not they received funding.

If your fiscal sponsor is an arts organization, double-check their eligibility by calling or emailing the Grants department: 718.625.0080; grants@brooklynartscouncil.org.

If your fiscal sponsor is also applying this year for Local Arts Support, your fiscal sponsor’s request plus your request must not exceed $5,000.

BAC cannot serve as a fiscal sponsor for Local Arts Support.

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP FOR COMMUNITY ARTS FUND
Individuals and informal groups do NOT need a fiscal sponsor to apply to the Community Arts Fund, but may apply with a fiscal sponsor if they prefer.

Community Arts Fund fiscal sponsors must:
• Be based in NYC
• Have 501(c) (3) IRS nonprofit status

If your fiscal sponsor is also applying this year to the Community Arts Fund, your fiscal sponsor’s request plus your request must not exceed $5,000.

If your fiscal sponsor has received funding from DCA (or through a legislative member item administered by DCA) for FY 2012, your project cannot be a collaboration with them.

Being fiscally sponsored by BAC does not preclude individuals from applying for the Community Arts Fund.

BAC offers general fiscal sponsorship to individuals and organizations for cultural projects with strong artistic merit that align with our mission. For more information on BAC's fiscal sponsorship program,click here, or contact Brooklyn Arts Council for details: 718.625.0080
