Application Guidelines

GROUPS:
Independent; College Student; or Youth (K-12). The youth group is open to group and school projects.

CATEGORIES:
Narrative; Documentary; Experimental; Animation; Video Installation; Brooklyn Filmmakers; Women of African Descent

LENGTH:
Feature (70 to 150 minutes) or short (less than 70 minutes)

SCREENING VENUES:
Brooklyn Museum, Iris B. Cantor Auditorium; Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus; Sony Wonder Technology Lab; Pratt Institute

FOR ALL APPLICANTS
Entries must be complete works no longer than 150 minutes in length. They must have been completed after January 1 within the two years prior to the festival year (i.e., 2008 festival submissions must have been completed after January 1, 2006). Industrial or instructional works and those previously submitted to the Film Festival are not eligible. All films and videos in a language other than English must be subtitled in English for Festival presentation. All entrants must complete the online application form and mail or hand-deliver a DVD or VHS tape for jury screening.

There is no limit to the number of entries each applicant may submit. Please submit a separate entry form and a separate screening tape or DVD for each entry.

SUBMISSION FORMAT
˝ inch VHS tape or DVD (region 0 or 1). We can only screen NTSC, not PAL or SECAM.

SCREENING FORMATS
35 mm, 16 mm, Beta-SP, DVD, Mini-DV, or VHS (subject to verification with Festival venues)

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES
The online application – either BAC or Withoutabox – must be submitted by November 26, 2007. Withoutabox offers early-bird discounts and charges additional fees for late applications. Whichever application form you use to apply, we will acknowledge receipt of your online entry by email.
You must submit your online entry form before delivering or mailing your entry fee and VHS tape or DVD to the BAC offices. We will acknowledge receipt of your VHS tape or DVD only if you enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard.

$40 for Independent entrants
$25 for College Student entrants
$10 for Youth (K-12)

If you choose not to pay your entry fee through Withoutabox, it must accompany your submission tape. Payments sent directly to BAC must be made by check or money order, must be drawn on a U.S. bank and payable in U.S. dollars. Remember, international applicants must apply and pay the entry fee through Withoutabox. Entry fees are not refundable.

LABELING
All tapes must be labeled with the following information:
1. Film Title, total running time, and category (narrative; experimental; documentary; animation; video installation; Brooklyn Filmmakers; or Women of African Descent).
2. Shipper’s name and telephone number.

Entries may be disqualified if they are not properly labeled.

PACKAGING
Films and videotapes must be shipped in a bubble pack envelope. Be advised that a fiber pack envelope can cause damage to tapes. If you must use a fiber pack envelope, please wrap your cassette securely in a plastic bag.

RETURN OF ENTRIES
Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like us to return your entry tape or DVD. Be sure to indicate that you would like your preview tape returned; we will not do so unless you indicate for us to do so on your application form.

JUDGING AND NOTIFICATION
Judging will take place in January 2008 by a jury of video and filmmakers, directors, producers, educators and other industry professionals working in the New York metropolitan area.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Jurors will evaluate films on the basis of artistic quality; cohesiveness of the artistic perspective; demonstrated knowledge of the medium; and appropriateness for diverse public audiences.

NOTIFICATION
Entrants whose work is chosen as an Official Selection of the 42nd Brooklyn Arts Council International Film Festival will be notified on or about March 31, 2008. Winners will be listed in BAC press releases, BAC News (BAC's quarterly newsletter), the Festival program, and on the BAC Web site.

Admission to all screenings is free and open to the public. Some screening sites may require tickets. Screenings at the Brooklyn Museum are free with museum admission.
