The Cine Banneker High Schools Film Festival was founded in 2005 by Kim Jameson and Jim Fielder, media arts teachers at the Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development, a public high school in Brooklyn.

The Banneker Academy mission is to provide a comprehensive course of study that will actively engage students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to a multicultural, scientific and technological society. Students draw upon community resources in preparation for the world of higher education and work. Their graduates become socially responsible, lifelong learners prepared to promote all aspects of community development as they meet the challenges of the future.

In its first year, the festival featured 13 films. City Councilperson Leticia James was so impressed that she hosted an encore screening event. Since then, the festival has continued to grow and gain support from schools and industry professionals alike.

Though initially designed for Brooklyn public high school students, the festival has expanded to include students who reside in Brooklyn and Queens and who attend schools or media programs in Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and beyond.

The Cine Banneker High Schools Film Festival is made possible, in part, with public and private funds from United Homes and New York City Councilmember Leticia James.
