Brooklyn has long been a destination for the arts. But in recent years the borough’s popularity among filmmakers and production companies has grown tremendously. Numerous production companies such as Steiner Studios, among others, have opened across the borough and film festivals and screenings series such as Sundance East are added every year.
There has been a significant increase in film and video activity, interest and resources available in Brooklyn in recent years. The following links may be of interest to film and video artists and to the film audience.

Screen Actor’s Guild-Indie (SAGIndie)
SAGIndie is a union between hard-working thespians of the world and passionate filmmaking mavericks who buck the system. Just because your film isn’t produced by a studio doesn’t mean you can’t use professional talent. In fact, input from indie producers continues to help SAG revise and improve its five low-budget agreements to make it even easier for filmmakers to use SAG actors, regardless of their budget.
Steiner Studios
Designed to the specifications of producers and facility operators in Los Angeles and supported by top New York artistic talent, Steiner Studios is a full-service, state-of-the-art production factory, equipped for start-to-finish production of major motion pictures, independent films, television, music videos and broadcast commercials. Steiner Studios opened in 2004 and is located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

ActNow Foundation Short Film Collective Screening Series
ActNow Foundation is a theatre and film arts organization dedicated to showcasing the varied, rich, and significant minority experience in America. Since 2004, ActNow has brought racially and culturally diverse performing artists together with arts enthusiasts to share in unique film and theatre experiences.
BAM Rose Cinemas
Dating from its first performance in 1861, BAM has grown into a thriving urban arts center that brings international performing arts and film to Brooklyn. The Rose Cinemas consist of a four-screen theater which opened in 1998. One screen is devoted to BAMcinématek, offering daily screenings of repertory classics and special festivals, with frequent guest speakers.
The Bridge Film Festival – An International Friends Festival of Student Film and Video
This festival is open to all Middle and Upper School students at Quaker schools worldwide. The festival’s goal is to promote value-based filmmaking and broaden dialogue on topics such as integrity, non-violence, social conscience, and political justice. The Bridge Film Festival does not seek films about Quaker philosophy, but rather films that depict Quaker ideals in action.
Brooklyn Center Cinema
Although the Center has not been presenting a regularly scheduled film program, they do arrange CinEvents every chance they get.
Brooklyn College, Film Program
The Department of Film offers a bachelor of arts in film with a possible concentration in film studies, film production, screenwriting, or film marketing. The department also offers a minor in film and a certificate program in film production or screenwriting.
Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT)
BCAT/Brooklyn Community Access Television, a program administered by Brooklyn Information & Culture, provides low-cost training in television production for Brooklyn residents; operates three public cable television channels dedicated to presenting programs of community interest and to a 24-hour bulletin board promoting services and events offered by more than 1,000 Brooklyn-based organizations; and produces programs of interest to Brooklyn residents.
Brooklyn Indie House
The BLFC's Brooklyn Indie House is one of the most innovative ideas to hit the independent film market. The Indie House is an intimate movie theater dedicated to showcasing filmmakers outside of the Hollywood machine and their policy is to share portions of the box office ticket sales directly with the filmmakers.
Brooklyn International Film Festival
The Brooklyn International Film Festival (BiFF), is an International, competitive festival for and by independent film makers. BIFF mission is to discover, expose, and promote independent film makers while drawing worldwide attention to Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Jewish Film Festival
The Brooklyn Jewish Film Festival is an independent, non-profit organization, committed to showcasing powerful features, challenging documentaries and exciting experimental and student films by filmmakers from Brooklyn and all over the world that promote public awareness of Jewish identity, history, culture and the diversity of Jewish Life.
Brooklyn Underground Film Festival
Founded in 2002 by a small group of passionate filmmakers and artists, the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival has successfully created an outlet for emerging new voices from around the globe. Focusing on independent and new film talent, the Brooklyn Underground’s mission is to create a fresh arena for discussion between filmmakers, artists, and audiences in an explorative and inspirational environment.
Brooklyn Young Filmmakers' Center
This nonprofit promotes literacy, leadership, social skills, intergenerational exchange and job training and placement through film studies, teaching filmmaking, and opportunities for networking with industry professionals.
Cine Banneker High School Film Festival
Though initially designed for Brooklyn public high school students, the festival has expanded to include students who reside in Brooklyn and Queens and who attend schools or media programs in Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and beyond.
Coney Island Film Festival
The mission of the Coney Island Film Festival is to raise funds for the non-profit arts organization Coney Island USA and to present an engaging and entertaining program of films in the heart of Brooklyn's most storied neighborhood.
Long Island University Media Arts Department
The Media Arts Department at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus provides academic and professional training in diverse communications and media fields. It offers a Master’s degree and undergraduate degrees in Media Arts, with concentrations in computer graphics, film and video production, media management, photography, video journalism and media theory. Its state-of-the-art facilities include multiplatform computer graphics labs, digital audio and video editing suites and digital and traditional photography labs, in addition to a television studio, digital audio studio and comprehensive media library.
Pratt Institute, Digital Media Program
This program provides the means to master the new technologies that are reshaping how people interact, communicate, and create new forms of expression. Digital Arts prepares students for art and design professions in which new media and new forms have become essential tools in the creation and transmission of audio/visual ideas.
Reel Sisters of the Diaspora
Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival and Lecture Series’ mission is to cultivate and spotlight the unique talent and struggle of women of color in the film industry. Our goal is to empower women filmmakers of African-American, Caribbean, Latina, Asian and African descent. Reel Sisters provides access to leading professionals through the presentation of panels and workshops on various topics from screenwriting to producing.
Rooftop Films
Rooftop Films is a non-profit film festival and production collective that supports, creates, promotes, and shows daring short films worldwide and in a weekly summer rooftop film festival.
