Come to the Cabaret!
Come taste the wine!
Come hear the music play!
Brooklyn Arts Council cordially invites you to join us from 6:30-9 pm on Thursday, November 15, 2007, for an unforgettable evening evoking the spirit of a bygone era.
Cabaret will be held at the elegant and historic fin-de-siècle mansion, The Caroline Ladd Pratt House at 229 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn.
Guests will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live performances by some of Brooklyn’s most talented entertainers, including jazz chanteuse Renee Manning, soprano Judith Barnes of Vertical Player Repertory, and saxophonist Sam Newsome. A Brooklyn native, Renee Manning is a soulful jazz vocalist with a robust voice, rich tones and impeccable time. She is best known for her five year association as featured vocalist with the Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Dubbed a “soprano-impresario” by the New Yorker, Judith Barnes is the founder and lead soprano of Vertical Player Repertory. She garnered rave reviews for the company’s summer 2007 site-specific production of Il Tabarro at the Red Hook Marine Terminal in Brooklyn.
Soprano saxophone player Sam Newsome is best known for his work with his cross-cultural ensemble, Global Unity. Most recently, Newsome has focused on composing and performing new solo saxophone music and has received several grants to support this work.
An exceptional auction will cap off the event. Items include a piece from internationally renowned sculptor Tom Otterness—best known locally for creating Life Underground, the much-loved colony of bronze figures that populate the 14th street/8th avenue subway station—and a sculpture from acclaimed artisan Dominic Ranieri, who cast the famous Wall Street bull. Also available will be gift certificates to The River Café and Picholine, a premium Yankee ticket package, original art from up-and-coming Brooklyn artists, and more.
