Frequently Asked Questions
Are there application fees or any other charges for the curator or artists?
No.
Are collaborations allowed between more than one curator?
Yes. A proposal submitted by more than one curator will be considered a single project. However, each curator must submit a resume and professional references.
How do artists join BAC’s Registry?
To join the free BAC Online Registry of Brooklyn-based literary, performing and visual artists, Click Here.
Can I use "my own" artists?
Yes – so long as they live or work in Brooklyn and join our registry prior to submitting work for the open call.
How many artists can be in an exhibition? How many pieces total?
Ten is the minimum. For small works, about 20 pieces fit reasonably in the gallery; about half that number for very large works. Please contact gallery coordinator Courtney Wendroff to schedule an appointment to see the space.
Can curators include their own work in their show?
No.
What will BAC Gallery provide? What is the budget for exhibitions?
BAC provides a $200 honorarium to the curator and hosts an opening reception. We design and print a postcard advertising the show, which we distribute to our contacts, and conduct additional press and public relations outreach.
What will I be responsible for if my proposal is selected?
Curators must be prepared to collaborate with the BAC Gallery coordinator on planning and promoting their show. You will be responsible for selecting the works, writing a curatorial statement, and gathering materials from participating artists requested by our communications department. You are also responsible for postage and any other costs associated with distributing postcards and press releases to your own contacts. Curators also plan enrichment events to accompany their exhibition, such as a curator’s talk, panel discussion, reading, film/video screening or performance.
What will artists be responsible for?
Artists must deliver their work to and retrieve it from our office in a timely fashion. They must also provide bios, resumes, press clippings and high- and low-resolution images of work included in the exhibition. We will provide them with postcards, but not postage, to deliver to their own contacts.
PLEASE NOTE: PROPOSALS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FEBRUARY 1, 2008 at 5 PM. Please plan ahead!
