WHAT: Sawt al-Mar’a: Voice of the Woman

Malika Zarra, Shoshana Tubi, and Gaida Hinnawi, with their ensembles, sing Arab classics and folk genres of the Levant, Egypt, Morocco, and Yemen, along with innovative original compositions.

This concert is part of the Elebash Concert Series: Tradition and Evolution in Arab Music made possible with major support from Baisley Powell Elebash Fund.

Throughout March 2008, BAC will present the Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival, a groundbreaking celebration of Arab musical traditions in Brooklyn. In a series of concerts, symposia and workshops throughout the month, Brooklyn Maqam will feature nearly 100 New York-based musicians and groups representing musical traditions from Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Iraq, Israel, Morocco, Syria and Lebanon in venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, such as Alwan for the Arts, BAM Café, Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College (BCBC), Joe’s Pub, and more.
