Brooklyn has long been a center of Arab community life, including various music traditions ranging from Lebanese and Syrian to Yemeni and Egyptian. Throughout the month of March Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) presents the Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival. In conjunction with the festival, Brooklyn Historical Society will host a roundtable discussion on the history and context of Arab music traditions in Brooklyn. Featured on the panel are scholars, musicians, and local members of Arab communities who will share knowledge and personal histories about the making and meaning of Arab music in and around the borough.
Speakers: A panel of music scholars and local community representatives discuss the history and relevance of Brooklyn’s evolving Arab music traditions. Panelists: Dr. Anne Rasmussen,
ethnomusicologist, Samuel R. Thomas, ethnomusicologist; Ray Rashid, owner, Rashid’s Music; Dr. Ahmad Jaber, President, Arab American Association; Ahmad Hisry, local historian of Atlantic Ave.; Phaedra (Dr. Phyllis Saretta); and Samihah, former owner of the Ibis nightclub, famous for Dance and live music from the mid 1970s-90s.
