Presented by BAC Folk Arts, Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival is a rare opportunity to experience the remarkable variety of Arab music traditions that flourish throughout the metro area!
WHEN: Friday, March 28, 9pm - Midnight
WHERE: Tarboosh Cafe
WHAT: Coffeeshop Hafla
Our hafla (party) starts out Lebanese style, featuring singers Basil Touma and Rana Beyruti performing traditional Levantine songs, mawwal, jabali and debkah. Dance with local Bay Ridge debkah group and taste Tarboosh’s shisha flavors and mezzes. The evening continues with Brooklyn Tunisian vocalist Ahlem singing a cocktail of Arab classics and pop. The night concludes with a special raqs sharqi (bellydance) performance by Brooklyn-based dancer LaUra. Jawad and Hisham join us on org and tabla.
Throughout March 2008, BAC will present the Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival, a groundbreaking celebration of Arab musical traditions in Brooklyn. In a series of concerts, symposia and workshops throughout the month, Brooklyn Maqam will feature nearly 100 New York-based musicians and groups representing musical traditions from Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Iraq, Israel, Morocco, Syria and Lebanon in venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, such as Alwan for the Arts, BAM Café, Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College (BCBC), Joe’s Pub, and more.
