Roots of the Community: Where It Began
On Saturday, May 10th from noon to 3:00p.m., BAC Folk Arts will tour Atlantic Avenue, including stops at Rashid’s Music, the oldest Arab music store in New York, and we'll sample delicacies at Sahadi’s, Damascus Bakery, and Malko Karkannian. This tour emphasizes food as the most publicly available remnant of Arab culture in Brooklyn Heights, which once thrived with Syrian-Lebanese residents, who came from Manhattan in the late 19th century. That population and numerous others—Egyptians, Moroccans, Palestinians, Tunisians—started making Bay Ridge the center of Arab residence beginning in the 1970s and 80s and continuing today.
Space is still available! Please meet at Rashid's Music (155 Court Street) at 12pm for the start of the tour.
Reserve your space now. (The tour cost is $15 and will cover food, sweets, coffee, tea, and other samples at various tour stops.) Click here for the payment screen or call 718-625-0080 to reserve your spot.
