An evening exploring Arab dance traditions, with primary emphasis on their performance in New York City presented by Dr. Kay Turner, who teaches in NYU’s Performance Studies Dept. and is also folklorist for the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). Co-moderated by Turner and Folk Arts Associate Nicole Macotsis, the panel brings together scholars and practitioners of Arab dance including Deborah Kapchan on Moroccan gnawa, Mohamed Bechar, gnawa master, Najwa Adra on Yemen bara’a, Yasser Darwish describing and demonstrating Egyptian tannoura and saidi , Phyllis “Phaedra” Saretta on New York style Oriental dance of the 1970s and 80s, and Levantine debka traditions discussed and shown by Eman Hamad.
