DANCE
The art of dance in any form offers students the opportunity to hone their coordination, focus, poise, and creativity, and to learn dedication, the value of hard work, and gain discipline and self-esteem.

MUSIC
Musical skills, music appreciation, history, and theory are presented in traditional formats, such as band and individual lessons, as well as instruction about traditions from around the world. Beat and rhythm are just the beginning!

THEATER ARTS
Students are provided with opportunities to study the full range of theater arts, from improvisation and conflict resolution to mime, puppetry, costume design, directing, props, and stage management. This interdisciplinary approach is incorporated into all theatrical production workshops.

Sample Workshops

DANCE FROM AROUND THE BLOCK OR AROUND THE WORLD
Ballet, ballroom, modern, tap, hip hop, artistic movement, rhythmic gymnastics, Afro-Caribbean, capoeira, bomba y plena, African, Irish step, jazz, Hawaiian, Haitian, and more! Dance offers much needed opportunities for physical and self expression, application of math skills, improvisation in movement, and immersion into a new culture and much, much more.

MUSIC LESSONS
Individual or group lessons on various instruments, from the bucket drums to violins to the recorder, are available. (BAC does not provide instruments.)

JAZZ!
Basic rhythms, the social and historical contexts of the music form’s development and the modern day implications of jazz are explored through a lively and flavorful presentation of sound, group participation, and discussion.

CHORUS!
Learn to use the instrument we all possess—our voice! Song selection can be themed with a culture of study, an upcoming school celebration, or be used to explore modern pop culture or a historical period.

LITERACY THROUGH MUSIC
Students learn the fundamentals of songwriting, and compose their own lyrics based on the curriculum used each day in their classroom. Students will use music to supplement the literacy curriculum schools are required to teach while providing a creative, musical experience. It is great fun and engaging for all students, from the outspoken to the shy, from English Language Learners to native English speakers.

CULTURAL CACOPHONY
Whether to enhance the classroom study of a culture or to explore students’ own heritages, learning to dance and play the music of people from around the world enriches academics, tolerance, and one’s sense of self. Dance and/or make and play the instruments of African, Brazilian, Andean, Celtic, Haitian, Caribbean, Japanese, and Native American communities with teaching artists native to the tradition they are instructing.

SHADOW, HAND, AND ROD - THE GUTS OF PUPPETS
Students learn the history, materials, and techniques of this art form and either write their own original play or create a play based on their own interpretation of a book or story. Students then make the puppets and theater and perform their own productions.

BROADWAY BOUND
Students learn all aspects of creating an original play, from scriptwriting, directing, acting, and music composition to designing and building scenery and props. Students learn to read and interpret plays and then mount their own production.

ALL THE STAGE IS A PLAYGROUND
Theater games are wondrous fun and are a deceptively cunning way to teach life skills such as public speaking, group work, critical thinking, and conflict resolution, while improving self-esteem. There is always a part for everyone, and everyone is a star.
