Arts in Education Community Programs

Arts learning and participation vitalize communities and the individuals within them. While working to instill understanding of and value for the arts in NYC students, we also strive to make learning in the arts available to other community members, from classroom teachers to parents and caregivers as well as senior citizens. See Workshops and Assembly Programs for available programming ideas. Select programs are available in Spanish.

Professional Development Sessions
These 2-hour sessions allow educational staff to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the materials, curriculum connections, and content in the chosen art form. They result in educators better equipped to present related learning in the classroom in more varied ways. These sessions can stand alone, offering skills teachers can use in the classroom to heighten excitement and strengthen retention, or be supplemental to other BAC programming as an excellent way to enhance program design.

Parent Engagement Sessions
What better way to engage parents in their child’s academic life and the school community than giving them a hands-on experience of what is happening in the classroom and offering them ways to continue that learning at home? These 2-hour sessions offer a fun and enticing reason to come into the school building, and can be facilitated for parents on their own, or be designed as projects to be done with parents and children together.

Programs for Adults and Seniors
BAC’s arts programming extends into senior centers, nursing homes, shelters, and community centers as individual or on-going Workshops and Assembly Programs. From jewelry making that creates revenue for the senior artist to the mosaics installation produced and installed by the residents of a shelter that inspires pride in their home, the benefits to the individual participants and to the community at large are immense. Movement and dance in a multitude of forms stimulate physical and mental well-being, as well as programs designed to document stories about one’s life in oral and written formats for family and friends. All workshops are taught by caring and gifted teaching artists whose compassion and kindness are only surpassed by their expertise and love for working with older adults.
