From Haiti to Brooklyn: Youth, Arts, Change
A Series of Free Youth Arts Workshops Saturdays in May
beginning Saturday, May 1st, 2010, 10am - 1pm
at K-189, The Bilingual School, located at 1100 East New York Avenue, Brooklyn. (3 train to Sutter Ave/Rutland Road)

In the aftermath of the earthquake that struck Haiti in January, we would like to address the needs of Haitian and Haitian-American youth of all ages by providing a creative outlet to express their loss. We hope to encourage and support their creative explorations and in the process teach effective coping strategies, foster supportive relationships, and connect children with their culture and heritage.

Our goal is to offer arts activities that will help them cope with the feelings brought about by the earthquake, as well as activities that simply offer a respite and an opportunity to enjoy themselves, all the while giving them a chance to document their experiences. And, as a part of each Saturday's activities, students will help create a portable "mural" that will be sent to a school in Haiti. This mural will represent Brooklyn�s solidarity with Haiti.

On the last day of workshops, May 22, we invite the community to join us in celebration of Haitian Flag Day and to view the student's work.

Workshop Dates: Saturday May 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd. We encourage students for all four weeks!
