Call for Submissions: What is the Where?

Recession Art, 07/12/10

What is the Where? is a show of work responding to the relationship between location, identity and perception. The exhibition is open to all emerging artists, with a focus on small installation/sculptural pieces and photographs.

Selections will be conducted by the Recession Art Jury led by Guest Curator Risa Shoup and Art Director Ani Katz. What Is The Where? will be held November 13 to 21 at The Invisible Dog in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.

The deadline for entries is August 9, 2010. The submission fee is $20. Artists will be notified of acceptance by the end of August.

How to Submit:
To be considered for the exhibition, please complete the form at www.recessionartshows.com/submit

1. Your Personal Info.

Name, Email Address, and Location.

2. Your Bio.

Tell us a little bit about yourself in 50 words or less.

3. Your Images.

Upload four images of your work. The images you submit should be recent work, representative of what you plan to show in November. You are not required to show the same work that you submit, but your submission should be in the same medium as what you plan to show (i.e. if you submit photography you should not then decide to show paintings if you are accepted). We encourage the creation of new work for What Is The Where?

4. Your Art.

Is there anything you want to tell us about the work you have submitted or about what you are planning to show (description, context, plans, etc)? Tell us here in 50 words or less.

5. How did you hear about us?

We are curious.

6. Payment.

A $20 entry fee is required in order to be considered. This fee helps cover the cost of our gallery space, the free food and drink we provide at the reception, and the publicity material that gets the word out about your work. We do not take a cut for ourselves or compensate our jury members.

Responsibilities for Selected Artists:
Recession Art relies on its artists to help make shows happen. If you are selected to participate in WhatWhere you will be responsible for:

1. Attending meetings

Accepted artists are required to attend brief monthly meetings leading up to the show. We will meet in September after acceptances are announced for an Artist Orientation. We will meet in October to distribute publicity materials and assign flyering routes. And we will meet in November to plan out our installation in the gallery. Meetings will take place in Brooklyn and are mandatory for all artists in the New York area. We will make other arrangements for out of town artists.

2. Four hours of publicity work

Recession Art produces postcards and flyers for our shows, but we need your help distributing them. Your publicity work will consist primarily of flyering in your own neighborhood. If you live outside the New York area, we may ask you to put in your time by publicizing the show online. Put in one hour a week for the month leading up to the show and you’re all set. We want to spread the word far and wide, and we can’t do it alone!

3. Handling your art

Recession Art cannot be responsible for getting your art to the space, installing it, taking it down, or delivering it to buyers. We will hold it and guard it when it is in the space, but before and after, it’s all yours. You must be present for installation on November 11th or 12th and de-installation on November 21st.

4. A 25% commission on all art sold at Recession Art Shows (or through Recession Art contacts)

Our small commission is just enough to keep us in business. Recession Art’s policy dictates that no single work of art can be priced over $800 during our show and we strongly encourage showing small works that can be sold cheaply alongside larger works. People want to buy art and we want to make it affordable to them!

If you agree to our terms and agree that Recession Art sounds like an great opportunity, submit your form at www.recessionartshows.com/submit
