Experimental World Music Performance, Blue and White Concert: The Book of Changes
Blue and White Concert: The Book of Changes is an experimental world music performance, which fuses between traditional Korean rhythms with contemporary Western music. The concept of this concert derived from the ancient Chinese classic book, I Ching, The Book of Changes. I Ching is an Asian’s view point that all aspects of life on earth change through the balance of dynamic opposite, known as the yin and yang.
Korean historical archive states that traditional Korean musical instruments were made from 8 different materials, including metal, stone, string, bamboo, poe (a type of plant), clay, leather, and wood. This fundamental idea is related with the 8 Trigrams of I Ching. With these concepts as the primary vehicle for a dialogue, Blue and White Concert: The Book of Changes seeks to harmonize the Eastern traditions with that of the West and explore our differences within the context of creative improvisation.
The artistic director, Vongku Pak's Korean traditional drumming serves as the basis for the mosaic of various cultural tales waiting to be told. Korean traditional drums that were once used throughout Korea for the purpose of spiritual communion, healing and encouraging various labor forces, takes on a new meaning with the Blue and White. The concert will bring together elements of traditional and modern music from both East and West, as well as other forms of art such as dance and interactive electronic art. These are new exam of “balance of opposite.” Mr. Pak is hopeful that the Blue and White Concert: The Book of Changes will bring various communities of New York City together in celebration of our heritage, diversity, unity, balance and harmony.
This event is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).
