"RECRUITMENT" silk screen on 4ft steel panel

PRESS RELEASE "PLAYGROUND PARRHESIA" BY ANDREA SPIROS
REGRANT RECIPIENT EXHIBITION AT BED- STUY YMCA

Solo art exhibition, ”PLAYGROUND PARRHESIA” by Andrea Spiros is an exhibition of prints and painting on 4 ft. steel panels. The work relates to the location the panels where found, a high school playground in Brooklyn, NY. The steel fortress that was the schoolyard fence evoked a prison yard, so the theme of schools and prison emerges through the architecture of the space, buildings and social structures that create them.
The work is a social criticism of the power structure that pays more for prison than schools, that sees fences, bars and metal detectors as preemptive as opposed to better educational options.
This exhibition will open in the community where the work was made and travel more broadly later. The exhibition will have an opening reception with poetry readings by Danny Simmons (from his last book of Poetry and Paintings); Lyte Burly spoken word artist will read new work, and D.Lammie Hanson will sing.

“Playground Parrhesia” is funded by the Dept of Cultural affairs and will take place at:
