Admission is free.

Exploring the Metropolis and Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy present Brooklyn-based composer/musician Rima Fand in a free concert featuring music she has created over the years which is inspired by folk culture. This program is the culmination of her 2013-14 EtM Con Edison Composers’ Residency at BYCA.

Rima will present four new choral pieces that she composed during her EtM residency, which are inspired by children’s rhymes, games and chants. Also featured will be compositions inspired by American, Spanish and Balkan folk music traditions. The source materials will be presented in traditional form, juxtaposed with the original compositions which grew out of them. For example: a double-dutch rhyme will be performed the way it would be on the playground, followed by the piece Fand created based on the rhyme.

Rima will be joined by: Sarah Alden, Yula Be’eri, David Fand Daniel Brian Jones, Cybele Kaufmann, Sarah Small, Alice Tolan-Mee, Shelley Thomas, plus Avi Fox-Rosen and Isabel Castellvi

Rima Fand is a Brooklyn-based musician and composer with a love for multidisciplinary performance. Her most recent project was a Lorca-inspired musical puppet play entitled Don Cristóbal, Billy-Club Man, co-created with puppeteer Erin Orr, which was produced at the Abrons Arts Center in February 2013. She has also created music for her raucous NYC string band, Luminescent Orchestrii, which toured internationally for a decade, for her Balkan-inspired acoustic quartet, Sherita, and for her women’s vocal trio, Hydra. Rima is also a devoted music teacher who has conducted arts residencies with young people in NYC schools for many years. She recently completed an EtM Con Edison Composers’ Residency at the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy.
