Seeking black females of all ages, shapes, and sizes for a public performance art project celebrating the life of Sarah Baartman, a Khoisian woman displayed as a freak in Europe until her death in 1815.
We will workshop movement, narrative writing, and sound toward the creation of a performance on pedestals in a public space in NYC on August 9, 2014—the 12th anniversary of Sarah’s burial in her native South Africa.
Participants must be available for three workshop sessions in July during which we will move, write, and construct pedestals to support our bodies.
Please e-mail a statement of interest including your age, languages, and performance experience (if applicable) to director Iquo Essien @ iquomma[at]gmail[dot]com.
Submissions welcomed from non-dancers and non-performers, as well as those identifying as LGBTQ, pregnant, elderly, blind, or disabled.
