The non-profit Brooklyn Young Filmmakers Center (BYFC) found a dream home at the Moore Street Market in Bushwick for its People's Hollywood Studio project. The 70yr old indoor open market is one of four remaining left in the city.
At the end of last year the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC) took back management of the Moore Street Market from the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, which had been contracted by the city to run the Market. In December the EDC announced it had voided all the leases of the small businesses (and the one non-profit, BYFC) in the Market.
On the Friday before Christmas week, in a conference phone call, the EDC told the board BYFC has to move out of the Market. The EDC has never met with us nor given us anything in writing.
The fates of some of the merchants might be also endangered. Most of them are Hispanic, and some of them are families who have worked there for generations.
Brooklyn Young Filmmakers is speaking out -- asking for due process, respect, and a community discussion about the vision for the Market.
If you hold dear these values, please send an email to the EDC. You can be from anywhere in the world. You do not have to be in New York to be part of the public that cares. Caring for justice is worldwide now.
Then tell your friends our story and ask them to also send emails. Let the city know there is an outside public that cares about due process at the Moore Street Market.
Peace and future to us all - Trayce Gardner, BYFC Director
