On December 27, 2016, the classical/hardcore/metal string quartet SEVEN)SUNS will perform the second concert of their new work; "Rikers: Songs of the Voiceless", a two movement work that is referenced by the experiences the group had volunteering at Rikers Island as a part of the Rangjung Dharma Prison Project, an organization that serves the inmates and the corrections officers by guidance through meditation practices that foster a greater sense of peace and release from habitual ways of seeing ourselves. The piece is an attempt to reflect the vital and radical work being done there. The first movement, "Trivisa", or "Three Poisons", is meant to convey the three poisons of delusion, attachment, and aversion in Buddhist philosophy. It is meant to convey the human experience of these poisons in the mind- how universal they are and how any of us could reasonably end up at a place like Rikers Island. The second movement, "Shunyata", or "Emptiness", is meant to convey the key truth of the Heart Sutra- "form is emptiness and emptiness is form" which is the goal of realization for any sentient being, and the key, according to Buddhist philosophy, to defeating suffering. The performance will be held at The Bad Room in the Good Room, 98 Meserole Avenue, Brooklyn NY on December 27th. L Train to Bedford Avenue or G Train to Nassau Avenue. SEVEN)SUNS will also perform pieces that will be featured on their upcoming album.
