Title: Director, Youth Programs

Team: Youth Education

Location: Manhattan/Brooklyn Studio

Reports To: Director of Operations, Co-Executive Directors

Status: Part-Time (25 hours to start, with potential for additional hours in the future), Regular, Non-Exempt

About Textile Arts Center:

Textile Arts Center (TAC) is a NYC-based resource facility founded in 2009 dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for children and adults. TAC’s mission is to unite and empower the textile community.  We do this by providing accessible, skills-based classes, artists programs, and community events to reinvigorate engagement with traditional crafts.  We’re proud to offer a diverse range of programming from a fully equipped 6,800 square foot studio in Brooklyn, and a 900 square foot studio in Manhattan.

During the school year, TAC offers fun and educational after-school classes in both studios for youth ages 6-10 in Weaving, Printing & Dyeing, Felting & Needle Arts, and Sewing & Fashion, which are offered in rotating 9-week cycles. Each summer, we also offer day-long summer camp programming that involves weekly field trips to textile exhibits to inspire hands-on activities and projects.  Additionally, TAC engages with the wider community by offering birthday parties and field trip opportunities for local schools.

We appreciate the unique values of textile arts and work to expand opportunities for new practitioners to engage with the medium. Experiential learning is the foundation of our model and enables students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels to make meaningful contributions to a growing community of fiber artists. Workshops, courses, events, and special programs at TAC allow professionals and novices alike to explore their creative ingenuity through handcraft processes. By engaging with the youngest newcomers to age-old experts, we aim to increase the positive social impact of textile arts and nurture innovations and leadership in the field.

Position Overview:

We’re currently in search of a Director of Youth Programs to lead our small team in developing and implementing a range of educational programming in both of our studios.  The ideal candidate will be an empathetic team leader with a background in arts education and program management. The Director must demonstrate a passion for supporting children’s artistic development and be a proactive champion of TAC’s mission.

While this role does involve classroom teaching, the majority of the role will be programmatic and administrative in nature. Major responsibilities will include direction of all school-year programming, including after school sessions, mini camps, birthday parties, and field trips, and major oversight for summer camp activities with a specific focus on activities in the Manhattan studio. Additionally, the Director will be tasked with managing all marketing and promotion efforts of youth programming, and establishing long term strategic planning to continually develop and enhance TAC’s youth offerings.

As the “face” of Youth Programs at TAC, the Director will be expected to provide responsive, high-quality customer service that enhances the general public’s understanding of TAC’s services and programs. The Youth Programs Director will regularly respond to public inquiries made in person, online, and over the phone, working closely with other TAC staff to ensure the general public is informed about specific TAC classes, events, and programs. TAC students represent many diverse communities, abilities, geographies, and ages.  Sensitivity towards a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, and a willingness to listen to and support others, is crucial to this role.

The Youth Programs Director reports to the Co-Executive Directors and Director of Operations, and supervises the Youth Education Manager/Summer Camp Director, along with all seasonal summer camp staff and interns. The Director works closely with the Director of Operations, Social Media Manager, and Studio Manager.

Due to the seasonal nature of TAC’s youth programming, the initial phase of this role will focus on training the incoming Director on after-school programming, and then shift towards summer camp preparation in January, and camp activities during July and August. Hours will vary throughout the year. From September - March, the role will be Part-Time at 20 - 25 hours per week, Monday - Thursday with 3 days of teaching in the Manhattan studio.  From April through August, the role will be up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Building from our current model, the Youth Programs Director will play a key role in developing Youth Education programming at TAC. The successful candidate must be flexible, entrepreneurial, and enthusiastic about contributing to this work.
