Selection of Face of Brooklyn Portraits
Artist previews public arts portraits of Brooklyn Residents at talk at the
Brooklyn Historical Society
The “Face of Brooklyn” is a collection of over 300 portraits, it is an anthropological catalog, community art initiative, and an exploration of the notion of archive.
Brooklyn based photographer, Nora Herting received a grant from the Brooklyn Historical Society to make original artwork inspired by the society’s collection. The “Face of Brooklyn” portraits give representation to a larger spectrum of the borough’s residents than what Herting initially found in the society’s photo archive. It was comprised largely of affluent New England families who had been members of the two hundred year-old society.
“The Face of Brooklyn” presents people as they present themselves. Each subject volunteered on the spot at Herting’s outdoor portrait studio erected at various public parks through out Brooklyn; the spontaneity of the moment is captured, contrasting the formality of portraiture with the naturalness of everyday life in progress.
Herting’s portraits reflect the variety and vibrancy of the residents of New York’s most populous borough at the beginning of a new century. The collection will be gifted both to the residents that participate and become part of the Brooklyn Historical Society’s photo archives.
Nora Herting will share stories about her adventures through Brooklyn as she met the subjects of her portriats and preview the 300 portraits from her project on Tuesday March 11th at 6:30 at the
Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St Brooklyn, NY. (718) 222-4111
