Please join us for an evening filled with music and poetry on Saturday, November 14, 2009 to commemorate the historic Haitian Revolutionary Battle of Vertières. Hosted by journalist, Joel Dreyfuss with Special remarks by Manhattan Deputy Borough President, Rose Pierre-Louis.
The Battle of Vertières, November 18, 1803, was the last and decisive battle against the French Army which led to Haiti’s Independence in January 1804. Led by revolutionary heroes, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Alexandre Pétion and François Capois, Haitians attacked the French-held fort of Vertières and caused Napoleon’s troops to abandon their stronghold and ultimately concede defeat -- giving birth to the First Black Republic in the Western Hemisphere.
Let’s come together to celebrate freedom, self-determination and independence. We look forward to seeing you!
