Brooklyn saxophonist Jeff Newell has always had a keen interest in how cultures and history combine to create musical traditions. While engaging in his musical career over the last 30 years (being fortunate to work with many well-known jazz artists), Newell continues to study the foundations of American music and to incorporate these elements into unique arrangements for his critically acclaimed New-Trad Octet. Mr. Newell has been featured in an article for Downbeat magazine, has received an NEA study fellowship and numerous performing grants, has a quartet CD release on IGMOD Records, and released the New-Trad Octet?s ?Brownstone? CD in 2007 on Blujazz Records. In addition to his busy performing schedule, Jeff Newell gives private instruction at the Brooklyn Music School?where he is Coordinator of the Jazz Faculty and Woodwind Department Head. He also served as the coordinator of music and worship at Brooklyn?s New Baptist Temple from 2000 to 2005.
