We have become a culture obsessed with safety. In this series of drawings entitled Wholesome Stories of Busy, Independent Children, I?ve depicted a world in which a rabid post-911 anxiety has invaded my childhood memories. Schoolyard brutalities take place in a barren future with no adults where science, technology and nature have fused in the absence of humanity. I use source material from childhood ? books I once loved, fairy tales and school work ? to belie the idea that youth is simply a time of innocence and to recall dormant cold war fears from the 60s and 70s. I combine these images with snippets from today?s violent and often bizarre media coverage to call attention to the way fear is used to convince us that restrictions on our freedoms are making us safer.
