Samuel R. Torjman Thomas is an artist and scholar. He studied woodwind performance and jazz composition at the renowned Berklee College of Music before beginning work on his soon to be completed Ph.D in Ethnomusicology at City University of New York - Graduate Center. Thomas is the bandleader of ASEFA, an ensemble which mixed Middle East-based styles with jazz, performing instrumental and vocal pieces (Hebrew, Arabic, and Spanish). Thomas is also the musical director of the NY Andalus Ensemble, a community-based ensemble in New York City performing the traditional musics of al-Andalus and North Africa. As a multi-instrumentalist (saxophone, clarinet, flute, nay, oud, frame drums, and piano) and educator for many years in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary school settings, Thomas is a consummate music clinician, symposia panelist, and presenter of applied ethnomusicology programs in jazz, Arab and Jewish musical traditions, and improvisation and composition.
