Joyce King, Artistic Director/Choreographer/Teacher,
Over the years, King’s versatility and insatiable appetite to uniquely express life through movement has afforded numerous opportunities to choreograph, teach and perform, traveling throughout the U.S., Vienna, Costa Rica, Belgium, France, and Tokyo, Japan. In NYC, King continues to enjoy teaching on faculty at Steps on Broadway, Joffrey’s Jazz & Contemporary Program, Joffrey Ballet Program and guest faculty at Broadway Dance Center.
King’s choreography has been commissioned for a variety of venues as part of special performances at Laguardia High School - Concert Hall, Merce Cunningham Dance Theater, Dance New Amsterdam, Pinkerton Academy Theatre Arts, Palace Theatre, Dansstage Dance Festival, The Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Eugene O'Neil Theaters in Costa Rica.
Joyce’s career path brings a multifaceted outlook on dance. Her extensive dance and acting training, combined with her unending passion to express, afforded King an array of performance opportunities such as, A Chorus Line, Cats Vienna, Fame: The Musical, Benefits for Broadway Cares; Michael Jackson Sportswear, industrials - choreographer Lynne Taylor Corbett, Boston Opera’s Aida and Die Fledermaus - choreographers, Sam Kurkjian, Graciella Daniele and newly written plays directed by Doug Hall.
Concert work included the Richard Levi Dance Company and prior to NYC, Impulse Dance Company, (IDC), Adrienne Hawkins, Director. As a Company member of IDC for 4 years, King was chosen to perform works by Master choreographers, Danny Sloan, Fred Benjamin, Consuelo, Ed Blee, Richard Levi, Lynn Simonson, Miquel Lopez.
In 2008, Joyce established JKing Dance Company. JKDC continues to captivate audiences with a unique blend of acting, ballet, jazz and modern dance. We are dedicated to creating and performing new dance works, and providing opportunities for young and emerging artists. On May 11th and 12th, 2012, at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, JKDC successfully produced a full evening of work for their first Benefit Concert, ‘Memories in Action’. Coming May 11th, 2013 JKDC will be once again presenting a full evening of work at The Ailey Citigroup Theater.
Past awards include full scholarships to Jacobs Pillow and American Dance Festival, where Joyce was chosen to perform works by guest choreographers Bruce Taylor, Chuck Davis, and Ron Forella. By invitation, Joyce attended the Oxford Summer Shakespeare program, in London England. She also feels blessed to have further worked with many other Masters of the Performing Arts, the influential Charles Kakasatkis, Michael Owens, Sally Johnson and Suzie Taylor - Michaud.
King continually finds joy in watching her dancers and students go on to perform in a variety of Companies and venues, such as, Cats, King & I, West Side Story, Industrials, plays, receiving scholarships and competition awards, as well as teaching throughout privately owned studios and schools.
Joyce is happily married to Ray and the proud mom of Aidan, her 9 year old son.
