A native of Northern California, Nathan Smith is an active performer and composer currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. In 2009, he formed the "Nathan Parker Smith Large Ensemble," a full big band regularly performing original music throughout NYC, including shows at the Fat Cat, Spike Hill, Cameo, and the Tea Lounge. The group recently finished a tour of the West Coast and is currently working on an album to be released in 2013. Smith's compositions have been performed by ensembles throughout the U.S. including Eastman Jazz Ensemble, the New Jazz Ensemble, the Studio Orchestra, the Shrine Jazz Club Big Band, the University of Reno Jazz Lab Band, the Reno Jazz Ensemble, Saxology, the BMI New York Jazz Ensemble, the Humboldt State University Jazz Orchestra, the University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire Jazz Ensemble and the University of Connecticut Jazz Ensemble. In addition, his music has been performed by solo artists including Rich Perry, Pat LaBarbera, Joe LaBarbera, and Louis Lorain. Smith has received numerous awards and grants for his work. He holds a BM in Studio Music and Jazz Performance from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, and a MM in Jazz Composition and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music.
