Adrian Coleman (b. 1984, Cheltenham, UK) is a British-American painter trained as an architect. Adrian Coleman studies urban anomalies. His large scale watercolor paintings refer to the “picturesque” tradition, an aesthetic once concerned with rugged deterioration but recently suggesting sentimentality. Borrowing techniques of architectural drawing, Coleman dissects the cityscape, juxtaposing interiors and exteriors, the city's ignored or invisible adjacencies.
Coleman is a winner of the 2012 Brooklyn Museum GO Open Studio Competition. He recently appeared in the Bronx Museum's 2015 Biennial "Bronx Calling". He studied painting and architecture at Yale University (BA, 2006) and received his masters degree from Columbia (M.Arch., 2012). He is also a licensed architect.
He lives and paints in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
