James Leonard is an American Artist known for his works in a range of media including drawing, painting, installation, video, sculpture, performance and social practice. A vociferous champion of ecological sustainability, he currently lives, works and composts in Brooklyn, New York.
His recent work addresses anxieties triggered by ongoing environmental crises, including climate change and ocean acidification. His most recent work, The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies, has been touring the United States since June of 2016. Inside this portable sacred space, James Leonard gives free climate change related Tarot readings. Having visited over 35 different sites, this piece has garnered media attention from outlets such as Hyperallergic and Smithsonian.
Born in 1973, Leonard received a BFA from Syracuse University in 1996 and an MFA with a concentration in complex systems studies from the University of Michigan in 2004.
